Life in Fanwood, NJ
Technically a borough, Fanwood is one of the smaller towns within the surrounding New Jersey area. However, it shares much of the same appeal of neighboring Westfield and Scotch Plains, in that the focus is on providing quality housing in an area that makes commuting easy. With local parks, shopping venues, and homes mixed together in just the right balance, Fanwood is one of the more popular locations for those who want to truly enjoy where they live.
Fanwood real estate is centrally located to provide access to all the boutiques, restaurants, local shops, and recreational amenities that make the area so appealing. Parks are spread out throughout the area, providing a dash of greenery to the landscape and providing an outlet for those who enjoy walking, biking, swimming, and playing sports. And with seasonal weather providing a warm respite in the summer months and often transforming the streets to a winter wonderland in the colder months, Fanwood is considered one of the most idyllic locations along this side of the United States.
Overall, much of this area has been developed with an eye to keeping things small and comfortable, but without ever sacrificing the modern amenities and luxury residents have come to enjoy. That means that in addition to the smaller shops and community features, there are also larger chain stores and homes built with every convenience in mind.

Scotch Plains New Jersey History and Community Info
Scotch Plains real estate is one of the best housing choices for those interested in a quiet lifestyle right in the middle of New Jersey. This residential community offers a series of friendly neighborhoods, all of which boast a luxurious, welcoming atmosphere and a number of outdoor recreation opportunities.
As one of New Jersey's more popular suburbs, Scotch Plains has a sound economy and a great housing market for those looking to find homes that are both affordable and sustainable. Homes for sale in Scotch Plains offer a variety of choices, ranging from newer homes in upscale neighborhoods to single- residences in communities that celebrate their strong ties and rich traditions. If you're in the market for a better life in one of the most beautiful and friendly places in the country, then Scotch Plains real estate is for you!
Homes in Scotch Plains: Yesterday and Today
With an ideal location outside New York and a beautiful, verdant countryside, Scotch Plains was one of the earliest settlements on the East Coast. Railroad history in the area has always been fairly strong; in addition to providing an outpost for those moving west through the state, the railroad has long been a part of the tourism and the commuting aspect of the town. As early as the late 1800s, people were using Scotch Plains as a “getaway” from the bustling hub of New York. Whether they came here as a way to visit their vacation homes, or as a way to separate the luxurious, verdant lifestyle of their country estates from the more urban daily experience, Scotch Plains residents have long valued the area for its relaxing atmosphere.
Today, Scotch Plains properties continue to provide a respite from the hustle and bustle of the nearby metropolitan center. However, commuting professionals and those who like to take advantage of New York from time to time can find that they are only a quick train ride away from all the action. The town also offers easy access to the state highways and the Garden State Parkway for maximum ease of travel.
With a focus on community, safety, and beauty, city planners and developers work hard to maintain the small-town feel while still providing the latest in technological and transportation needs. Whether you purchase your new home in Scotch Plains as a way to ease into a regular commute or you come here for a slower pace of life all around, you'll always enjoy the great combination of suburban living with regular urban access.
Choosing Your Scotch Plains Home
Scotch Plains real estate options are diverse. Many historic homes dating to Colonial and Victorian times are available, with a detailed focus on preservation and accuracy without sacrificing any of the modern comforts of life. Older homes with a vintage appeal dating from the 50s and 60s are also widely available along the south side of the city, as part of a mid-century expansion that found many residents searching for a way to own their own piece of the countryside. New homes in Scotch Plains are also available in developments designed for those seeking a great combination of community and access to quality schools.
Many of the housing developments in the town offer amenities to Scotch Plains home owners. From tennis courts and swimming pools to local parks, many neighborhoods are centered around facilities designed for use by residents. This sort of community vibe lends itself to the welcoming atmosphere Scotch Plains is known for, since it brings people together in ways they may have never thought possible before. And with Business Week's seal of approval as the “best affordable suburb” in New Jersey, more and more people are discovering just how great life here can be.

Mountainside New Jersey History and Community Info
In the days before Mountainside became a borough with its own government it was part of the Township of Elizabethtown, which was organized in 1693, covered a wide area, and included the West Fields. The Locust Grove, Branch Mills, and Baltusrol sections of the West Fields, rural communities composed mostly of farmers, later became Mountainside. The Dutch preceded the English in some areas of New Jersey, but the majority of settlers here were English. Descendants of some early pioneers still live in the area.
"Some early eighteenth century houses are still standing in Mountainside but others have given way to modern buildings, both residential and commercial. One of the earliest homes, built by pioneers James and John Badgley in 1738 near where Trailside Museum now stands, became a garage for the Union County Parks Commission. Arson destroyed it in 1984. The Deacon Andrew Hetfield House, built about 1760, was used by the Hetfield family or in-laws until 1936. From then through the early 1980’s it was an antique shop called the Dutch Oven. When developers bought the property in 1984, they planned to demolish the house. Fern Carter Hyde, chairman of the Mountainside’s Historic Preservation Committee, persuaded the Borough Council to save it, and on June 29, 1985, the house was moved to Constitution Plaza near the Mountainside Library. The Hetfield House is now on the National and State Registers of Historic Places.

Cranford New Jersey History and Community Info
Known at the turn of the century as the Venice of New Jersey, the Union County Township of Cranford grew up around the meandering Rahway River. In 1720, John Crane of nearby Elizabeth Towne (now Elizabeth) built a grist mill on the north side of a ford in the river and a sawmill on the south side. That mill at Crane's Ford provided grain for Washington's troops during the Revolution.
Cranford remained a backwater until 1838, when the Elizabethtown and Somerville Railroad made it accessible to New York City. "The railroad and the river led to Cranford's development, first as a recreation center and later as a commuter suburb of New York City," said Lawrence P. Fuhro, president of the Cranford Historical Society.
In 1871 Cranford was incorporated as a township and "by 1885," Mr. Fuhro said, "76 residents commuted daily to New York City." For many who built their homes along Rahway, the river quickly lost its charm. There was frequent flooding until the late 1970's, when the town, with aid from the Army Corps of Engineers and several state agencies, built detention basins and dredged the river.
The most important of the many historic buildings is the 1740 Williams Droescher Mill, on Lincoln Avenue. Now owned by a messenger service used as an office building, it is the oldest continuously operated commercial building in New Jersey. Its cast-iron water turbine is still in place.

Buying Land and New Construction >Building Considerations
Are you planning to build your dream home? Once you are pre-approved for a loan and have found a professional real estate agent you trust, you are ready to start looking for the perfect lot.
Compare the qualities of several target neighborhoods by looking at schools, shopping, recreation and zoning. Make sure that the zoning regulations allow you to build the size and height of the home you want. Find out if there are use restrictions that would prevent you from developing your property as you intend. A visit to the local planning department will clarify your options for building.
Consider what type of home would best suit your lifestyle. Create a checklist to itemize the "must-have" interior and exterior features of a house that you feel are absolute requirements. Make notations about yard size, paint, roof and window conditions for the exterior, and floor plan, room quality and condition of the appliances for the interior. Bring your lists to your real estate agent. Together you can look over the currently available properties that correspond to your needs.
